Speed (1994), Keanu Reeves and the G-SHOCK DW-5600C-1V

Speed is one of those movies I have watched probably 10 times over the years. It came out in 1994, Keanu Reeves as LAPD SWAT officer Jack Traven, Dennis Hopper as the psycho bomber, Sandra Bullock on a bus that cannot drop below 50 mph or it explodes. Pure 90s action, big stunts, huge hit at the time and one of those movies that just keeps holding up no matter how many years pass.

But the thing I never really paid attention to when I was younger was the watch Keanu is wearing throughout the movie. Only when I started Time Vibe and got deeper into G-SHOCKs I realised what he had on his wrist for the whole film — the G-SHOCK DW-5600C-1V, a square G-SHOCK from 1987 that you can spot clearly in multiple close-ups during the bus scenes.

The watch that almost everyone has seen but didn’t notice

The funny part is, the DW-5600C-1V is not some flashy special edition or a collab. It’s just the classic square G-SHOCK in plain matte black resin. No metal bezel, no rainbow finish, no big logo, nothing fancy. Just the same shape that has been G-SHOCK’s identity since the very first DW-5000C in 1983.

And that is exactly why it works in the movie. Jack Traven is a SWAT cop, not a fashion guy. He needs a watch that is tough, readable and just works. A regular guy’s tool watch. The DW-5600C-1V fits the role perfectly without anyone making a big deal of it — and that is probably why for years a lot of viewers didn’t even register it was there.

A few things about the DW-5600C-1V

The DW-5600C-1V is a 1987 model and one of the more historically interesting G-SHOCKs out there:

  • It has a stainless steel screw-back case, which most newer DW-5600 models don’t have anymore.
  • It was the last basic 5000-5600 series with the screw-back, so collectors today see it as a kind of bridge between the original 1983 DW-5000C and the more modern DW-5600 line.
  • During its lifetime (1987 to about 1996) it was made with two different modules (691 in the early years, 901 in the 1990s) and in two different factories called “Japan A” and “Japan H”. The early Japan A / module 691 watches are the more sought-after ones for collectors.
  • The DW-5600 family was flight-qualified by NASA, meaning it has actually been worn by astronauts in space. Not many watches can say that. So Jack Traven on a bus and an astronaut on the ISS were basically wearing the same G-SHOCK.

There is also one fun detail that fans of the movie have spotted: in some of the close-up shots of the watch, the DW-5600C-1V on Keanu’s wrist is actually set to alarm mode, not normal time mode. A prop department oversight more than anything, but it’s the kind of thing you only notice if you really care about watches. I love these little details.

Can you still buy “the Speed G-SHOCK” today?

Yes and no. The original 1987 DW-5600C-1V is no longer in production, and clean vintage pieces have become collector items, easily a couple of hundred euros on the second hand market in good condition.

BUT the good news is the same square case is still very much alive in G-SHOCK’s current line-up. If you want something that gives you the same look and feel as what Keanu wore on the bus, the closest options today are:

  • The DW-5600UE-1ER — the modern update of the classic black square, with EL backlight and the updated module. Same shape, same vibe, current production.
  • The DW-5600E-1V — the long-running modern successor of the DW-5600C, very close in appearance.
  • The GW-5000HS series — for the people who want as close to the old screw-back stainless steel construction as possible, just with modern features.
  • The DW-5000R-1A — the recent re-release of the original DW-5000C shape, which I wear myself almost every day as my main watch.

Out of all of these I would say the DW-5600UE-1ER is the most “Speed-correct” modern equivalent if you just want the look from the movie at a normal price. If you want to go full collector, the GW-5000HS or the DW-5000R-1A are the ones to look at.

All in all

Speed is a great movie and the DW-5600C-1V is a great watch. It’s a perfect example of what I love about G-SHOCK in general — a watch that is so well designed and so timeless that the same shape from 1983/1987 is still in production today and still looks good on the wrist, whether it’s on a SWAT officer in a 90s action movie or on a regular person going to work in 2026.

If you have not watched Speed in a while, watch it again and pay attention to Keanu’s wrist. You will see the G-SHOCK now that you know what to look for.
