What all those letters and numbers actually mean.

What all those letters and numbers actually mean.
Ever looked at a Casio model number like GW-B5600BC-1BER and wondered what on earth it means? You’re not alone. Casio packs a lot of information into those letters and numbers — the watch family, features, color, band type, even which part of the world it was made for. Once you know how to read it, you can tell exactly what a watch is just from its name.
Here’s the full breakdown.
A Casio model number is read left to right. Each segment tells you something different. Not every model uses all segments — simpler watches may only have a few parts.
Let’s take GW-B5600BC-1BER as an example:
| Segment | Example | What it tells you |
| Type / Series prefix | GW | Watch line — G-Shock WaveCeptor (solar + atomic) |
| Series modifier | B | Feature — Bluetooth |
| Series number | 5600 | Specific model series |
| Series suffix | BC | Variant details (band/bezel style) |
| Color code | 1 | Primary color — Black |
| Order letter | B | Variation within the color |
| Region suffix | ER | Target market — Europe |
The first letters tell you which G-SHOCK family the watch belongs to and what features it has.
| Prefix | Meaning |
| DW | Digital Water Resistant — the original, basic G-SHOCK. Battery powered, no solar or atomic sync. The DW-5600 is the most iconic example. |
| G | Basic G-Shock — rarely used in current models. |
| GA | G-Shock Analogue — battery powered, analogue-digital display. The GA-2100 “CasiOak” is the most well-known. |
| GAS | G-Shock Analogue Solar — solar powered analogue. |
| GAW | G-Shock Analogue WaveCeptor — analogue with solar + atomic timekeeping. |
| GB | G-Shock Bluetooth — older Bluetooth models. |
| GBA | G-Shock Bluetooth Analogue. |
| GBD | G-Shock Bluetooth Digital — e.g. the GBD-200 step tracker series. |
| GD | G-Shock Digital — digital display, battery powered. |
| GG | Master of G Analogue — no atomic sync. |
| GL / GLX | G-Lide — designed for surfing and snow sports. GLX is the Xtreme variant. |
| GM | G-Shock Metal-Covered — stainless steel bezel on a resin body. Lighter and cheaper than full metal, with a premium look. The “M” stands for metal. |

| GR | G-Shock Solar — solar powered, no atomic sync. |
| GST | G-Steel — metal and resin layered construction for a tough, refined look. |
| GW | G-Shock WaveCeptor — solar powered + atomic radio timekeeping (MultiBand 6). Always accurate, always charged. |
| GWF | Frogman — the legendary dive G-SHOCK. ISO diver certified, asymmetric case. |
| GWG | Mudmaster — mud and dust resistant, triple sensor (altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer). |
| GWN | Gulfmaster — designed for marine use. |
| GX / GXW | Xtreme — oversized G-SHOCKs. The GX-56 “King” is the most famous. GXW adds atomic sync. |
| MRG | MR-G — the top of the line. Titanium, hand-finished in Japan, GPS + Bluetooth + solar. Prices start around €2,000+. |
| MTG | Metal Twisted G-Shock — metal and resin hybrid construction, premium line below MR-G. |
Not all Casio watches are G-SHOCKs. These prefixes cover the rest of the lineup.
| Prefix | Meaning |
| AE | Digital — general Casio Collection. |
| AW | Analogue Water Resistant. |
| BG / BGA / BGD | Baby-G — the women’s counterpart to G-SHOCK. BGA is analogue, BGD is digital. |
| CA | Calculator Alarm — the iconic calculator watches. |
| EFR / EFV / EFS | Edifice — Casio’s motorsport-inspired analogue line. EFS includes solar. |
| MDV | Duro — the affordable diver. The MDV-106 “Casio Duro” has a massive following. |
| MRW / MTP / MTS | General analogue Casio Collection watches. |
| OCW | Oceanus — premium titanium line with solar and atomic sync. Mostly JDM (Japan only). |
| PRG / PRW | Pro Trek — outdoor watches with triple sensor (altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer). PRW adds WaveCeptor (atomic sync). |
| SHE | Sheen — women’s elegant analogue line. |
| WVA / WVQ | WaveCeptor — radio-controlled timekeeping. WVA receives European signals, WVQ receives worldwide. |
These appear between the prefix and the series number. They add a specific feature to the base model.
| Letter | Meaning |
| A | Analogue display |
| B | Bluetooth |
| G | GPS |
| H | Heart rate sensor |
| M | MultiBand (atomic timekeeping) |
| Q | Quad Sensor |
| S | Small / compact size |
| T | Titanium |
| X | Extra large |
Example: GA-B2100 — GA (G-Shock Analogue) + B (Bluetooth) + 2100 (series). So it’s a CasiOak with Bluetooth added.
These come after the series number and before the color code. They describe band type, materials, or special editions.
| Code | Meaning |
| D | Stainless steel bracelet |
| T | Titanium bracelet |
| L | Leather strap |
| Code | Meaning |
| BC | Band/bezel composite variant |
| CS | Crazy Colors |
| DM | Denim strap |
| GB | Black & Gold colorway |
| K | ICERC — whale and dolphin conservation collaboration |
| RB | Red Bull collaboration |
| RD | Rescue Red |
| SK | Clear Skeleton (translucent case/band) |
| TC | Triple Crown of Surfing edition |
| WC | World Cup edition |
There are many more special edition suffixes — Casio releases new ones with every collaboration and limited edition.
A single digit tells you the primary color of the band and bezel.
| Code | Color |
| 1 | Black |
| 2 | Blue |
| 3 | Green |
| 4 | Red / Pink |
| 5 | Brown / Beige |
| 6 | Purple |
| 7 | White |
| 8 | Grey |
| 9 | Yellow / Gold |
Example: The GA-2100-9A9ER — the 9 tells you the main color is yellow. The A9 after it indicates the accent/secondary color is also yellow — full monochrome.
After the color digit comes a letter — A, B, C, D, and so on. This distinguishes different variations within the same color. Two watches can both be “black” (color code 1) but look different because of accent colors, display type (positive vs. negative), or other design details.
Sometimes an additional digit follows the order letter, using the same 1-9 color system, to indicate the secondary or accent color.
Example: GA-2100-1A1 — color 1 (black), variant A, accent 1 (black) = all black. GA-2100-1A3 — color 1 (black), variant A, accent 3 (green) = black with green accents.
The very last letters in a model number tell you which market the watch was intended for. This is important to understand: the watch itself is physically identical regardless of region code. Only the packaging, manual language, and warranty territory differ.
So a GA-2100-1A1ER (Europe) and a GA-2100-1A1DR (Asia) are the exact same watch.
| Suffix | Market |
| ER / EF | Europe |
| CR / CF | Americas (Cordillera Region) |
| DR / DF | Asia / export markets |
| J / JF / JR | Japan (JR often indicates limited release) |
| V | International / export |
| PF / PR | China |
