The heritage

Light-Powered Since 1976

In 1976, Citizen created the world’s first light-powered analog quartz watch. Not solar-powered — light-powered. The distinction matters. Citizen’s technology converts any light source into energy — sunlight, office lighting, the lamp on a bedside table — and stores it in a rechargeable cell that never needs replacing. The company introduced this system under the Eco-Drive name in 1995, first across Asia, Latin America, and Europe, then to the United States in 1996. By 2007, Citizen estimated that Eco-Drive had eliminated the disposal of ten million batteries in North America alone.

The ladies’ Eco-Drive collection is where that technology meets its widest range of expression. From 25 mm crystal-set dress watches to 37 mm sport models with 100 metres of water resistance. From mineral glass and steel to sapphire crystal, Super Titanium, real diamonds, and sustainable materials including apple leather and ECOPET recycled polyester. The common thread across every watch in this collection is the rechargeable cell behind the dial, quietly converting light into time.

In 2016, Citizen launched Citizen L — a dedicated sub-brand built entirely around the idea that elegant watches and environmental responsibility belong together. Citizen L models use Eco-Drive exclusively, source sustainable materials wherever possible, and disclose the CO2 emissions for every individual model. Through a partnership with 1% for the Planet, Citizen pledges a percentage of its website sales to nonprofit environmental organisations. The majority of the ladies’ Eco-Drive collection you see on this page carries the Citizen L name. It is the line where diamonds meet sustainability.

The technology

Why Eco-Drive Changes What A Watch Can Be

Five things to understand about the movement behind every watch on this page.

01

Any light. Any time. No battery.

Eco-Drive is not solar power in the way most people understand it. The photovoltaic cell beneath the dial converts any light source — direct sunlight, fluorescent office lighting, even a desk lamp — into electrical energy stored in a rechargeable cell. Once fully charged, most models run for six to eight months in complete darkness. Some models carry a power reserve of up to two years. The cell never needs replacing. No case back to open. No battery to dispose of. Citizen invented this technology in 1976, and it remains the foundation of every watch on this page.

02

Sapphire crystal across the premium tiers

Sapphire crystal — rated 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, surpassed only by diamond — protects the dial on every Citizen L model and across the Platform and sport tiers. Sapphire is what makes a watch effectively scratch-proof in daily wear, and most brands reserve it for watches priced well above where Citizen offers it. Combined with polished stainless steel cases and screwdown or pressed casebacks, the result is a watch that looks the same after two years of daily wear as it did on day one.

03

Diamonds at prices that shouldn’t work

Across the Citizen L Mae, ARCLY, and Ambiluna collections, real diamonds sit at the dial or the case — sometimes one at 8 o’clock to catch the light like a raindrop on a petal, sometimes four at 3 o’clock for a jewellery-like presence. These are not cubic zirconia. They are genuine diamonds, set into watches powered by light and built from sustainable materials, at price points that make diamond-set watches accessible rather than aspirational.

04

Sustainable materials throughout Citizen L

Citizen L uses apple leather — an upcycled material made from apple peels and pulp left over from food processing — for straps that are soft, flexible, and petroleum-free. ECOPET straps are woven from recycled PET bottles using material recycling technology. Recycled polycarbonate sits beneath the mother-of-pearl dials. And every Citizen L model publishes its CO2 emissions data. The commitment is not a marketing badge. It is an engineering specification built into the bill of materials.

05

Super Titanium — lighter, harder, hypoallergenic

Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium is five times harder than stainless steel and 40 per cent lighter. A surface-hardening treatment developed by Citizen gives the titanium extreme scratch resistance without sacrificing the light, comfortable feel on the wrist. Super Titanium is also completely hypoallergenic — no nickel, no skin reactions. For anyone who has ever found a steel bracelet too heavy or too irritating, the Super Titanium models in this collection solve both problems at once.

The Sustainable Luxury Collection

Diamonds. Mother-of-pearl. Apple leather. Recycled materials. Every model Eco-Drive powered.

Citizen L Mae

The May Bells Collection

The Mae collection is the heart of Citizen L. The case is shaped like a vintage perfume bottle, with curved lines inspired by May bells — the delicate bell-shaped flowers of lily of the valley. The crown at 3 o’clock is designed to resemble an elegant perfume stopper, and on Citizen L models it carries the signature limpid blue synthetic sapphire cabochon that is exclusive to the sub-brand.

Mother-of-pearl dials sit on bases made from recycled polycarbonate. Diamonds mark the dial — a single diamond and precision-cut accent at 8 o’clock evoking a glistening raindrop on a petal, or four diamonds at the 3 o’clock case position for a jewellery-like finish. The EM1060 and EM1063 models carry four and five diamonds respectively, with rose-gold and steel case options. The EM1070 range brings the Mae design across three colourways on steel bracelets. The EM1073 pairs the Mae case with an apple leather strap. The EM1074 offers ECOPET recycled polyester and bicolour steel options. And the EM1136 adds a two-tone case with a sapphire crystal and a diamond at 8 o’clock. All Mae models use sapphire crystal and the E031 Eco-Drive caliber.

Citizen L Ceci

The Modern Dress Collection

The Ceci collection takes a different path through the Citizen L philosophy. A 32 mm case — larger than the Mae — with a synthetic sapphire-set crown that catches light from any angle. The E031 Eco-Drive caliber sits inside. Sapphire crystal protects the dial. Water resistance holds at 50 metres.

What defines the Ceci is the strap programme. The EM1163 pairs a brown dial with an apple leather strap in a two-tone steel and pink-gold case. The EM1166 takes a taupe dial with an Eco-Pet strap — woven from recycled PET bottles. The EM1160 models offer black and other dial colours on stainless steel bracelets. The EM1162 completes the range. Every Ceci model carries the Citizen L commitment to sustainable materials, CO2 disclosure, and light-powered engineering.

The EM1140 and EM1143 Lakeside models step up to 33 mm with date display and come in copper, blue, and other dial finishes with sapphire crystal. And the EM0920 is an earlier 28 mm Citizen L piece with mother-of-pearl and sapphire.

Five Times Harder. Forty Per Cent Lighter.

The FE6151 Super Titanium models use Citizen’s proprietary surface-hardened titanium for the case and bracelet. The result is a 34 mm watch that weighs noticeably less than its steel equivalents, resists scratches better than stainless steel, and is completely hypoallergenic. The J810 Eco-Drive caliber powers the movement with a 240-day reserve. The FE6151-82A carries a white dial with Arabic numerals. The FE6151-82X brings a green dial. Both offer date display and 50 metres of water resistance.

The Daily Wear Tier

Not every Eco-Drive is built around diamonds and sustainability pledges. The largest section of the ladies’ collection is the everyday tier — watches that deliver Eco-Drive technology in classic dress designs at accessible prices. Crystal-set dials, mother-of-pearl, rose-gold and two-tone finishes, leather straps and steel bracelets — all powered by light, all sized for a feminine wrist.
