The DW-6900U-1 is the modern, LED-backlight refresh of one of G-SHOCK’s most recognisable designs — the original DW-6900 from 1995. The “U” suffix marks the updated module (3529, introduced May 2023): same compact case, same triple-graph dial with three circular sub-dials nested above the main digital readout, but with a more efficient white LED backlight replacing the older blue-green EL light, and a battery life pushed out to roughly five years on a CR2016. Pure matte black resin, no metal accents, no concessions to current trends — the DW-6900U-1 looks the way it did when Casio first shipped the original three decades ago, and that is exactly the point.
The 6900 series cemented its cultural status in 2000 when Tom Cruise wore one as Ethan Hunt in John Woo’s Mission: Impossible 2. The watch is on his wrist throughout the film, from the opening cliff-climbing sequence onward, and the close-up shots turned it into one of the most identifiable on-screen G-SHOCKs of the modern era. Twenty-five years later, the same case is still in the catalogue, still recognisable on sight, and still associated with that role for an entire generation of viewers. It is the kind of cultural staying power that most fashion-watch collaborations spend years trying to manufacture and never quite land. The DW-6900 got there by being itself for long enough that the world caught up. (We wrote about the watch’s role in the film in more detail here.)
Under the resin, the DW-6900U-1 is built to G-SHOCK’s full standard. Shock-resistant construction, 200-metre water resistance and a mineral glass crystal protected by raised case lugs that take impacts before the glass does. The triple-graph display shows seconds, day of week and stopwatch/timer information simultaneously across the three sub-dials. Functions include a 1/100-second stopwatch with 24-hour measuring capacity and auto-repeat, a 24-hour countdown timer, five daily alarms with hourly time signal, a flash alert that pulses the backlight along with the buzzer on alarms and timer alerts, a full auto-calendar to 2099 and 12/24-hour format. The white LED Super Illuminator lights the entire face with selectable illumination duration and afterglow. Power comes from a CR2016 battery tuned for approximately five years of operation.
